Eyelid Surgery in Detroit

Combining artistic vision with precise surgical skill, Dr. Zuliani is a double board-certified plastic surgeon dedicated to creating natural and harmonious results.

Introduction:

Surgery to Liven Up the Eyes

It’s often said that the eyes can say a lot about a person–but sometimes they could be communicating a look that is much older than one actually feels. Sagging or drooping of the upper eyelids and puffiness or bulging around the eyes could add years to a person’s appearance and may even lead to some visual obstruction. As a double board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Zuliani performs upper and lower eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, as a means to help men and women restore a youthful and vibrant appearance of the eyes and face.

1

Correct drooping or
sagging of the upper eyelid

2

Reduce puffiness or
bags around the eyes

3

Create an overall younger and brighter appearance of the face

Eyelid surgery can be performed to correct aging of the upper eyelids, under-eye area, or both. This popular facial plastic surgery procedure is often combined with complementary surgeries such as laser resurfacing, a facelift and neck lift, or brow lifting to complete the facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Zuliani’s focus on the individual is why patients trust him

He pays careful attention to each patient, taking the necessary time to assess the situation and ask questions during the consultation. Dr. Zuliani does not come up with a standardized treatment plan on the spot. Instead, he considers the best approach in each special situation, studies photos of the patient, designs a personalized plan, and only thenpresents his recommendations.

Dr. Zuliani also has a keen understanding of the differences among patients of different cultural backgrounds. He knows how to treat the face in a way that complements a patient’s individuality rather than changing it. His goal is to provide each of his patients with results that are in tune with his or her unique lifestyle, culture, and identity.

Who might benefit from eyelid surgery?

Dr. Zuliani recommends blepharoplasty to patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their eyes due to age or–in some cases–genetics. Based on each patient’s individual case, Dr. Zuliani can help to determine whether upper, lower, or both eyelid surgeries would be most beneficial. In some cases, the sagging near the eyes may be the result of a sagging brow. For these patients, Dr. Zuliani would instead recommend a brow lift.

What is the Final Result of Eyelid Surgery at Zuliani Facial Aesthetics?

The goal of upper eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is to address signs of aging associated with the upper eyelids. This may include drooping, sagging, or wrinkling of the upper eyelids. Dr. Zuliani may also perform this procedure to treat congenital defects, such as Ptosis, a drooping or falling of one or both eyelids (often referred to as “lazy eye”).

Lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty helps to address concerns with the area beneath the eyes. This may include puffiness or bags beneath the eyes caused by the accumulation of fat or excess skin. Men and women considering lower eyelid surgery often feel as though they appear constantly tired.

What can be expected after eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery often does not require a lengthy recovery period; however, the healing process will vary from patient to patient. The majority of swelling and discoloration around the eyes typically fades within 7-10 days of surgery. At this time, you should also be able to wear makeup to cover up any of the fine incision lines. Most post-surgical scarring will have nearly disappeared after several months.

Once fully healed, your eyes will reveal a much younger side of you. Sagging and drooping of the upper eyelids and/or puffiness beneath the eyes will be dramatically reduced, showcasing a more lively and energetic appearance of the eyes. The results of your blepharoplasty are designed to be very long-lasting and can help maintain a younger look for years to come.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and what can it treat?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can treat drooping or hooded upper eyelids that impair vision, puffy under-eye bags, excess skin creating a tired appearance, and fine wrinkles around the lower lids. It is one of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures performed today.

What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, addressing hooding and heaviness that can make you look tired or even obstruct vision. Lower blepharoplasty targets under-eye puffiness, bags, and skin laxity. The two procedures are often performed simultaneously for comprehensive eyelid rejuvenation, but each can be done independently based on your specific concerns.

Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

You may be a good candidate if you have significant excess upper eyelid skin, under-eye bags that do not respond to fillers or skincare, or functional vision impairment from drooping lids. Ideal candidates are in good general health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations. Medical conditions such as dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, or thyroid disorders will be evaluated during your consultation.

Will eyelid surgery leave visible scars?

Incisions for upper blepharoplasty are placed within the natural eyelid crease, making scars virtually invisible once healed. Lower blepharoplasty incisions are placed just below the lower lash line or entirely inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach) for patients whose primary concern is fat removal without excess skin. Scars typically fade to fine, imperceptible lines within a few months.

How long does blepharoplasty recovery take?

Most patients experience bruising and swelling for 1–2 weeks following eyelid surgery. You can typically return to work and normal activities within 10–14 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3–4 weeks. Reading, screen time, and contact lens use may need to be limited in the first week. Final results are usually fully visible within 4–6 weeks.

How long do blepharoplasty results last?

Eyelid surgery results are long-lasting, often remaining visible for 10–15 years or more. Upper eyelid results tend to be particularly durable. However, the natural aging process continues, and factors such as sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyle can influence how long your results last. Some patients eventually choose a touch-up procedure years later.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, blepharoplasty is frequently combined with a brow lift, facelift, laser resurfacing, or injectable treatments to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining procedures can reduce overall downtime compared to having each done separately, and allows for harmonious, balanced results across the entire upper and mid face.

What are the risks of eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is considered a safe procedure when performed by a qualified surgeon, but risks include temporary dryness or irritation of the eyes, asymmetry, scarring, infection, and in rare cases, difficulty closing the eyes (lagophthalmos) or changes in vision. Choosing a board-certified plastic or facial plastic surgeon with significant eyelid surgery experience minimizes these risks considerably.

How is eyelid surgery different from a brow lift?

Eyelid surgery addresses excess skin, fat, and laxity of the eyelid itself, while a brow lift elevates descended or heavy eyebrows that may be contributing to the appearance of hooded upper lids. Sometimes patients believe they need blepharoplasty when in fact their issue stems from brow ptosis. Your surgeon will evaluate both areas to determine whether one or both procedures are appropriate for your goals.

Can Botox lift droopy eyelids?

Botox can have a moderate lifting effect for the brows which can slightly lift the lids, but blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is often the best way to significantly improve sagging skin on the eyelids.
