Ear pinning for children is typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Zuliani will use a local anesthetic for adults. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis and patients are able to return home shortly after surgery under the care of a loved one.
A small incision is made behind each ear allowing for Dr. Zuliani to reshape the underlying cartilage and bring the ears closer to the sides of the head. Sutures may also be used to secure the ears at their new position.
Your otoplasty procedure will be performed by Dr. Zuliani onsite at Zuliani Facial Aesthetics in Bloomfield Hills, or at a nearby accredited hospital or surgery center.

What can be expected after otoplasty surgery?
Otoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery that does not require a very lengthy recovery period. Given the location of the incisions, any post-surgical scarring will be kept hidden behind the ears. A bandage will need to be worn over the ears for about one week after otoplasty. Once removed, a headband will be worn during sleep to further protect the ears for another 1-2 weeks.
The results of otoplasty will be noticeable immediately; however, bandages will need to be worn for the first week. Once the bandages are removed, most swelling and discoloration will have dissipated, leaving a natural appearance of the ears. The ears will lie closer to the head and provide a well-balanced framing of the face. Dr. Zuliani loves performing this surgery and seeing the boost in self-confidence many of his patients experience from their results.
